Chicago Scots

The Scottish Home has a rich history of providing care of seniors throughout the Chicagoland. We were founded by the Illinois Saint Andrew Society and continue to be supported by the Chicago Scots. Established in 1845, the Illinois Saint Andrew Society/Chicago Scots is the oldest 501©3 charity in Illinois. Today it is one of the world’s largest Scottish cultural organizations. Their mission is to nourish Scottish identity through service, fellowship and celebration of Scottish culture. They welcome everyone who is Scottish by birth, by heritage or simply by inclination. In addition offering a range of outstanding elder care services at The Scottish Home, the organization also offers scholarships and organizes events and initiatives to educate, entertain and promote both traditional and contemporary Scottish culture.

History

Old black and white photograph

In 1845, a group of Scottish immigrants founded the Illinois Saint Andrew Society, the oldest charity in Illinois. Driven by a mission to provide relief to elderly Scots, the society built the home in 1910. The Scottish Home is the very heart of the Society.

Just seven years after the Home opened, it was destroyed by fire. The Society, however, refused to let tragedy rob the Scottish community of what had become a symbol of the Society’s “Relieve the Distressed” motto. Within two weeks, the Society’s Governors had raised enough funds to rebuild the Home at its current location.

The Illinois Saint Andrews Society is still the only Society in the world that provides a Home for elderly Scots and others. Our Community is now a Home to residents from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.

What Makes Us Unique

We have roots in Scottish culture, but provide a home for seniors of many ethnicities. We provide hospitality, loving care, peace of mind, and a variety of enriching activities. The intimate size of our home and our staff’s longer than average tenure of employment allows them to develop a close bond with residents as well as their families. This is a bond you would experience in your own home and it’s what makes The Scottish Home special – where friends become family.
